The monument was constructed to thank an engineer – Franciszek Rover for building the road in Zawoja. The building of the road took place from 1910 to 1912 and improved the communication conditions between Zawoja and Maków Podhalański. The previous road was situated too close to the river at some points, which caused its flooding especially in spring and made it impossible to use. The monument is situated on the site which was the most demanding and required the biggest amount of work. Franciszek Rover also designed the first hostel on Markowe Szczawiny.
